Prince Harry engages with Botswana diamond
Prince Harry of Wales has always had a soft spot for Africa especially Botswana, where he has been quoted as saying ‘am incredibly fortunate to be able to call it my second home.’
It is no wonder that the prince engaged his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle with a stone that features a Botswana diamond.
Prince Harry got engaged to American actress Markle on Monday with a yellow gold ring that featured contemporary three stone design.
Designed by the Prince himself, the ring boasted a centre stone from Botswana and two other diamonds belonging to his mother Princess Diana’s personal collection.
Last year November again, Botswana diamond made headlines as the second largest huge diamond was discovered here at home. Named Lesedi la Rona, the diamond was reported to be the size of a tennis ball and the largest rough gem quality diamond in existence.
The couple’s relationship started last year after introductions from mutual friends, and thereafter they vacationed in Botswana at Meno a Kwena safari camp.
From their first interview since the engagement, one can easily pick that the couple bonded more when they were in Botswana and that the place is special to both of them.
Markle also celebrated her 36th birthday in Botswana.
Clearly Botswana is a special place for the two.
She was quoted by Telegraph Luxury @Telegraphluxury on twitter saying “to be able to have this ring which links where (Harry) comes from and Botswana which is important to us-its perfect.”
Several tweets came in congratulating the couple on their engagement with mention of the Botswana diamond.
@BrandBotswana tweeted; “The #diamond comes from #Botswana, a country with a special meaning to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.”
Roth Safari @Rothsafaris tweeted; “Congratulations to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their engagement, and for choosing a diamond from Botswana….”
Prestige Magazine @Prestige_Magazine tweeted “#Royalwedding Congratulations Prince Harry and @meghanmarkle on their engagement.
Her ring is something special: with one central diamond from Botswana and the other two from Princess Diana’s personal collection.”
Prince Harry’s engagement has put Botswana on the spot not only for her diamonds but rich tourism destination for anyone who wish to holiday in the country.
In an interview Brand Botswana acting executive director Bame Moremong, she said the recognition would go a long way in placing Botswana on centre stage with the very positive media coverage the country was receiving.
She said Botswana prides herself on mining diamonds in a sustainable manner; adding for Prince Harry to have selected a Botswana diamond for his fiancée was testament to the years of pride and progress in mining and positioning Botswana as a diamond destination.
Moremong indicated that Botswana’s offering was a rich one which encompasses not only minerals but tourism, beef and the warm people.
Therefore she said as Brand Botswana they look forward to receiving more guests and tourists who wish to fulfill their tourism and diamond dreams in Botswana.
The couple’s wedding will be in spring, and one can only hope that they have their honeymoon here in Botswana to complete their tourism and diamond love story. BOPA
