Oliver Mtukudzi laid to rest

The late Zimbabwean musician, Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi who was declared a national hero has been laid to rest at his rural home in Madziwa, 150km north of Harare in the Mashonaland Central Province.

Tuku, as he was affectionately called by his legion of fans became the first Zimbabwean artist to be declared a national hero, a status normally accorded former liberation war heroes.

He could have been buried at the national shrine but his family opted for his rural home, in honour of his wish as he reportedly told those close to him that when he dies he should be buried at his ancestral home.

The government however still paid for all the funeral expenses.

Mtukudzi succumbed to diabetes at the Avenues Clinic in Harare on Wednesday.

The funeral, befitting a true hero was attended by thousands of people from within and outside the country.

Mourners included top government officials, opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, the business community, local and regional musicians among others.
