BSE gets equal for all
On Friday 06th march 2020, the Botswana Stock Exchange commemorated International Women’s Day in a unique and impactful manner. The actual day for the commemoration was set for Sunday 8th March 2020 but the bourse just had to do it earlier and this is why…
Every first Monday of the month, the Botswana Stock Exchange hosts what is called and Opening Bell Ceremony signaling the official opening of the trading month. The ceremony involves an address by the bourse leadership and various industry representatives and the local media, and since trading is only done during weekdays the bourse had to commemorate earlier than the set date.
The event took the 2020 International Women’s Day theme - “I Am Gender Equality: Realising Women’s Rights” and was entirely led by women. The Master of Ceremony was the Head of Legal Services and Board Secretary, Ms. Gorata Tlhale Dibotelo who later handed over to Ms. Thapelo Moribame, Head of Market Development also at the Botswana Stock Exchange, to facilitate a panel discussion. The panel was made up of leading women across different industries, Mascom Wireless CEO Ms. Dzene Makhwade-Seboni, Debswana Pension Fund CEO Ms. Gosego January, KPMG Managing Partner Ms. Gosego Motsamai and lastly ETF South Africa director & CFA South Africa President Ms. Nerina Visser.
The panelists all shared their experiences and view towards gender equality and collectively agreed that there is great progress yet much still needs to be done. They may be in leadership roles across their different organisations and industries but the male to female ratio is still far from equal. The women also encouraged other women in attendance to not give in to the pressures that come with leadership as women as they have, and are actually still fighting and overcoming those.
