Botswana, Zimbabwe pledge reciprocity
International affairs and cooperation minister, Dr Lemogang Kwape has pledged Botswana’s support to Zimbabwe on issues of economic development, good governance and regional integration.
Speaking during a meeting with Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Dr Frederick Shava in Gaborone Tuesday, Dr Kwape said as Botswana embarked on transforming into a high income country, it wanted fellow SADC countries to follow suit.
“As we set out to be a high income country, we want our neighbours in the region to become high income countries too so that we can self-sustain ourselves as SADC,” he stated.
Congratulating Dr Shava on his appointment to the current portfolio in February, Dr Kwape expressed delight that his counterpart had chosen to visit Botswana as part of his courtesy visits to SADC countries.
Dr Kwape said he looked forward to meeting with Dr Shava again to discuss indepth Botswana-Zimbabwe Bi-national Commission matters.
He requested Zimbabwe’s support for Mr Elias Magosi’s SADC executive secretary position candidacy.
Responding, Dr Shava pledged his country’s full support for Mr Magosi’s candidacy and asked Botswana to return the favour by endorsing Mr Chief Charumbira for Pan African Parliament’s presidency.
Dr Kwape promised that Botswana would reciprocate.
Meanwhile Dr Shava has thanked Botswana for the warm reception he was afforded since arrival.
The two ministers also discussed issues before the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security. ends
