Mascom Top 8 set to begin
The nations premier football tournament, Mascom Top 8 is in its 8th season this year and set to kick off this weekend. Preparations for the tournament have been underway by the Botswana Premier League, tournament sponsor Mascom Wireless and all other stakeholders.
Earlier this week, the tournament administrators and facilitators, Botswana Premier League (BPL) and it's Local Organising Committee (LOC) held a press conference to update stakeholders, the media and general public on the esteemed tournament. The tournament, which runs alongside the national league and now the Cup of African Nations (CAF) is set to start on the 23rd of November 2018 with a fixture between Orapa United FC and BDF XI.
However, the LOC had since encountered a challenge in the teams that have qualified for the current season of the tournament. Township Rollers FC, one of Botswana's best football teams had a significant number of their players engaged in a national fixture outside of the country. The FIFA rules and regulations, according to the BPL and LOC state that a team with more than 3 players engaged in a national fixture can be allowed to dishonour a league or Botswana Football Association (BFA). This has resulted in Township Rollers FC turning down the Saturday fixture against new entrants Black Forest FC.
The challenge hence presented by this has had the LOC moving the Township Rollers FC vs Black Forest FC to a later date of 30th November 2018 while the remaining fixtures continue as planned. The first leg of the tournament will start with Orapa United FC vs BDF XI in Orapa followed by Miscellaneous FC vs Gaborone United FC in Serowe and lastly Jwaneng Galaxy FC vs Sharps Shooting Stars FC in Jwaneng.
