Mascom Sponsors 10km Race @Diacore

One of the biggest sporting competitions on the Botswana calendar is finally here with runners ready to beat their times at this years 2018 Diacore marathon. The marathon is an incredibly fun day out for the entire family with great activities such as Zumba, water slides, stage performances, food courts and plenty of refreshments. As an AIMS and IAAF certified event the Diacore Gaborone Marathon is a qualifier for the Commonwealth and Olympic games. It is also widely renowned as one of the flattest and fastest routes in the region. In 2016, the marathon created the Diacore Gaborone Marathon running program which features up to ten of Botswana's elite long distance runners. The team has since gone on to conquer podiums all across the nation through to Soweto in South Africa and of course their home course of the Diacore Gaborone Marathon. Leading Telco-giant, Mascom has once again committed to sponsoring the 10KM race; currently the most widely registered race of the marathon. The minimum age requirement for this race is that the athlete must be 10 years or older on 13 May 2018. Mascom’s contribution towards sports development in the country ranges from football, volleyball, chess and netball, to mention a few so it came as no surprise that they saw it fit to support the Diacore marathon for another year. One of the most exciting things about the 10KM race is the preparation that different running clubs undergo in order to prepare for it. 10KM may sound like a walk in the park for some but it takes a seasoned runner to complete the race without breaking a sweat. Runwidit BW, Orange Running Club, Nedbank running club and Diacore Gaborone Marathon running program are expected to be some of the clubs that will participate in the 10KM race, and if their prep work is anything to go by, we are in for a showdown!

The 2017 10KM race saw Thabang Masiako, from Nedback Running Club complete the race at 0:29:13 closely followed by Sylvester Koko of Diacore Running Program and Phillemon Mathiba of Nedbank Running Club.  It was clear from the top 5 men and women’s results that Nedbank running club and Diacore Gaborone Marathon running program came prepared. This year we look forward to witnessing these clubs beat their time and hopefully a new entrant to the top 5 Men’s and Women’s race.
