Makwala qualifies for world championship 200m final
Isaac Makwala has made it to the IAAF World Championships finals after finishing in the semi finals in 20.14sec to ensure his qualification.
In his initial solo time trial Makwala needed to beat 20.53sec to qualify for the 200m semi-finals, a time he beat smoothly at 20.20 sec in rainy weather conditions.
He had been barred from running in the 200m heats and the 400m final due to alleged sickness but was allowed to run a specially convened 200m time-trial.
Yesterday Makwala crossed the line after his first race to enormous cheers and then started doing press-ups, a clear indication that athletics’ governing body, IAAF, had been wrong to bar him from the 200m heats and 400m final.
Meanwhile, Minister of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Thapelo Olopeng yesterday said government has engaged lawyers to draft protest papers against the IAAF’s decision to bar Makwala from the 400 meter world championship final.
Addressing the media, he said government was concerned at the way the case was handled and was prepared to fight the issue until the bitter end.
