It goes without saying that The Mascom Top 8 is the best footballing event in Botswana and it’s attendance and following across platforms attests to that. This weekend saw the opening of the first leg semi-final games with a match up against Orapa United FC and Gaborone United FC, former winners of the prestigious tournament.
The second game had the 2016/17 champions Jwaneng Galaxy FC face off against the popular Township Rollers FC. Lobatse Sports Complex, assumable home ground for the defending champions Jwaneng Galaxy was home of the game and the mood was electric. Supporters of both teams flocked the stadium to fill up the stands and cheer on their teams. Both teams went on against each other in an intense first half and goals flown in. The defending champions Jwaneng Galaxy took the lead with a goal by Gabriel Baruti in the 8th minute of the first half only to be countered by Motsholetsi Sikele’s equalizer in the 9th minute.
Mosha Gaolaolwe scored Rollers’ second goal in the 44th minute giving Township Rollers the lead in the first half. The two teams continued with the grueling match up with Jwaneng Galaxy effecting a change to strengthen their with Terrance Mandazha, removing Atisang Batsi as Township Rollers continued to pound their defence. Patrick Kaunda of Jwaneng Galaxy FC equalized the score despite this in the 33rd minute of the second half bringing back life into the game. The charged up Jwaneng Galaxy went on neck and neck until the end of the game. We await the second leg of the games to catch up on some footballing action.
