Our Journey in Botswana
When it was licensed on the 29th March 1998, Mascom promised to have the network on the air to coincide with the then US President Bill Clinton's visit to Botswana, introducing the network with anticipation for continuous success.
Mascom has maintained the tradition and introduced cutting edge innovative products and services. The following year Mascom spread its wings to introduce international roaming and launched SMS (Short Message System) in 2000. Kwik - recharge which is the most technologically advanced method of recharging through cellphone was launched in 2003.
In 2004 Mascom was the only Mobile operator in Botswana to be ISO Complaint; these international standards were qualified once again in 2006 with the Environmental Management System: ISO 140001:2004 certification and ISO 9001:2000 Certification. In the same year cellphone banking was launched, another Mascom’s commitment to service excellence and convenience to our customers.
2007 saw the introduction of GPRS/EDGE network coverage that spans 95% of the population. Mascom was the first mobile operator to launch 3G/HSDPA covering the cities of Gaborone in 2008 and Francistown in 2009.
In June 2012, Mascom announced the aggressive expansion of 3.5G technology, which upon completion will see close to 80% of Botswana’s population enjoying the benefits of super-fast broadband access, with speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Concurrent to the 3.5G deployment, the 2.5G network was also upgraded to increase capacity by over 50%. At the same time Mascom launched the 4G LTE pilot project which positioned Mascom among the first in the SADC region to announce the advanced technology.
On the same year, Mascom launched the Mascom Innovation Centre, a state of the art building that hosts the Data centre which is the hub of the Mascom network country wide and the Energy Centre which deploys ultimate redundancy and ensures service continuity. The architecture of the Innovation Centre reflects the company’s drive towards innovation in the cellular communications field. The centre will increase ICT knowledge and serve as a platform to allow citizens to have access to cutting edge telecommunication technology.
