Over time and as years pass by Botswana youth have came to engage in different activities including Smoking water pipes (also known as hubbly bubbly, narghiles, shisha and goza). It is also viewed as less harmful than smoking cigarettes. Nothing could be further from the truth!

World Health Organisation tobacco expert Edouard Tursan d'Espaignet said the names may sound cool, but they are not. They are dangerous and addictive killers…"one session of shisha can be equal to smoking 20 to 30 cigarettes in one go, which can be very dangerous".

WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative says although hubbly bubbly have previously been the domain of older males, "younger people between 18- and 24-years-old living in cities and educated" are increasingly smoking them.

Head of pathology and laboratory medicine says a romantic flavourings are giving younger smokers a "smoother and more tolerated" alternative to the taste of traditional tobacco, went on to say harmful effects include impact on the "respiratory system, cardiovascular system, oral activity and teeth". Researchers has found that a water pipe smoking session, which typically lasts between 20 to 80 minutes, may expose the smoker to more smoke (and its harmful effects) over a longer period of time than when smoking a cigarette.

This hubbly bubbly side effect comes in the form of a light headed feeling, almost the same as being “tipsy” or the starting fase of drinking too much alcohol. The extent of this light headed feeling varies from one person to another depending on a person’s physical wellbeing and the regularity of smoking hubbly bubbly. This head rush as we like to call it is a pleasant experience as it has a similar effect of alcohol, lasts a lot shorter and doesn’t leave you regretting what you did the previous night, “hangover”. One can increase the light headed effect by smoking a lot of hookah/hubbly bubbly at once – meaning inhaling smoke continuously for a certain time period. This would not be advised for anyone as the risks are unknown and not everyone is used to smoking so much hubbly bubbly at once.
